Jazz for the City: The Matt Harris Quartet

Renowned jazz pianist Matt Harris brings his quartet to close the 2016–2017 Friends of Music concert series with a program of favorite tunes drawn from the Great American Songbook. Appearing with Matt are three players, each of whom are jazz legends in their own right: Rob Lockart on sax, Domenic Genova on bass, and Lee Spath on drums.

A graduate of the University of Miami and the Eastman School of Music, Matt Harris is co-director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Northridge, and is a current faculty member at Yellowstone and Idyllwild Arts summer jazz camps. He is the VP for California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ) and is a National Panelist for Young Arts based in Miami.

Matt has written for, and toured and recorded with jazz legends Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Other legendary jazz greats with whom Matt has collaborated include Bobby Shew, Lanny Morgan, Bob Sheppard, Neal Peart, Chad Smith, and many others.

Matt has played piano and/or written music for some of today’s top jazz vocalists, including Karyn Allison, Jackie Allen, Diane Shure, Dena Derose, Kevin Mahogany, Kurt Elling, and many others.

Matt’s six CDs of original music include two trio CDs, Snap Crackle and Bellavino Blues, as well as a 2008 recording by the HR German radio band available as a digital-only download available on his Web site.

This is Matt’s second appearance on the Friends of Music series.
