The “King of Instruments” takes center stage in this free concert, as Pasadena Presbyterian Church’s magnificent Æolian-Skinner pipe organ is heard with voices and instruments.

Howard Hanson’s richly textured Concerto for Organ, Strings and Harp anchors a program that also includes world premieres of pieces by Maarten Spruijt and Anthony Rispo, along with works by Ralph Vaughn Williams and Arvo Pärt. Organists Timothy Howard and Philip Allen Smith are joined by the Pasadena Singers, the Friends of Music Orchestra, and conductor James T. Sale.

Program:

  • Maarten Spruijt: Thurémin for Choir, Strings, Percussion and Organ (world premiere)
  • Arvo Pärt: Salve Regina
  • Ralph Vaughan Williams: Serenade to Music
  • Anthony Rispo: Suite, Op. 2, for Organ and Strings (world premiere)
  • Howard Hanson: Concerto for Organ, Harp and Strings
